WE HAVE MOVED! (22/5/15)

Dear MEDL,

You might've read that this blog has become inactive from our Facebook page. That is because I have moved to 'Electra and Marian'!

It's been difficult to maintain two blogs at the same time, so why not go to the blog where I post more? It had also been a pleasure posting on this blog for three years.

I hope you enjoy the content I post on Electra and Marian. See you there!

30-D-M-C: We're All In This Together! (29/3/15)

Dear MEDL,

Day 29: A song from your childhood

Flash back to the '00s!

I remember dancing to this song back in the Philippines when I was three years old. My main dance move to this song was punching my fists downward to my feet while bouncing my knees side by side. When I heard this song for the first time when I moved to NZ, I screamed!

Who could forget 'High School Musical'? Go, Wildcats! I recall the time in year two when my friends and I gathered to create an HSM group. Hilarious.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 27 - Songs I Wish I Could Play (27/3/15)

Dear MEDL,

Day 27: A song you wish you could play

I really wish that I could sing Christine's songs from 'The Phantom of the Opera'. If I sang them now, you could easily relate me to a goat's screech.

Again, I wrote 'Buffy' into this challenge because those guitar strums make me flare with passion.  If only I had an electric guitar and long fingers!

30-D-M-C: We'll Be 'Twerking' Again (25/3/15)

Dear MEDL,

via pinterest.com

Day 25: A song that makes you laugh

Anaconda by Nicki Minaj makes me laugh over the improper behaviour of today's rap music, but I won't upload a video of it on this blog post.

'Human again' from Beauty and the Beast makes me cachinnate because when I auditioned for my school's musical last year, Gwen and I made a parody of this production called 'Booty and the Beast' where every character acts sluggishly and amateurishly. There's a part of this song that sings, "We'll be twirling again." and I tend to imagine that they're saying, "We'll be twerking again."
Sure, you could describe me as immature.

Day 23: A song that you want to play at your wedding

If I were to have a wedding, I'd play 'The Last Night of the World' from Miss Saigon. My mother always encouraged me to listen to it ever since she introduced me to Lea Salonga and dang it, these lyrics and soft tune are my weaknesses!

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 21 - A Song I Listen To When I'm Happy (21/3/15)

Dear MEDL,

Day 21: A song you listen to when you're happy

I found this new song on Youtube called 'You Are The One' by Elliott Yamin and it doesn't matter what kind of mood I'm in whenever I feel the desire to listen to it. This song has such positive lyrics and an easy-going beat to accompany Elliott's raspy voice.

Completing this challenge from my perspective seems like a paradox to you since I'm mostly posting corny love songs and I don't actually believe in the explicable power of love. The songs that I write about remind me of my favourite TV couple, Booth and Brennan and I guess that's the only reason why I enjoy them, apart from the ear-catching tunes.

Welcome to NZ, Colleen and Entourage! (19/3/15)

Dear MEDL,

Colleen Ballinger (Miranda Sings on Youtube) is in New Zealand as I write this post! Jayden, my friend, is coming to her concert and will have such a great time. To benefit from her time here in New Zealand, I wrote her a letter similar to this:

Dear Colleen,

You are the most hilarious, creative, and lovely person on Earth. You have graced the world with your talents. Thank you for taking the time to visit New Zealand, the 'Land of the Long White Cloud'. I bet you enjoyed performing and meeting my friend, Jayden.

I am Marian. I am a teenager and have been a Mirfanda/Colleen Cookie since 2012. My favourite videos of yours are the sassy dances you do with Kory and the vlogs featuring your wonderful friends and family. My favourite Miranda videos are 'California Gurls' and 'Thinking Out Loud'.

I hope you enjoy your stay here in NZ! Please say hi to Josh, Rachel, Teeny, Mr./Mrs. Ballinger, Chris and his family, Kory, and Trent for me.

Stay powerful and beautiful as usual,
Marian Yao

I assume that the letter was well-written since Jayden smiled at me and hid it safely in his journals, afraid that the letter would fall out.

Day 19: A song from your favourite album

My favourite music album is 'The Family Jewels' by my favourite music artist, Marina Diamandis.

I chose this song because it reflects the hedonistic and savage behaviour of some people at my school. I also like the murky pitch of the violin at the beginning.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 17 - A Song I Hear Often On The Radio (17/3/15)

Dear MEDL,

Day 17: A song that you hear often on the radio

In New Zealand, it is the law for radio stations to have at least a fair percentage of New Zealand music played (I can't explain that very clearly, but I hope you received the message). I hear this nice song by Ginny Blackmore often, and I enjoy the mellow sounds of her voice. Music lovers on different sections of this world should be aware of her music, in my opinion.

I've known this song since I was eight, but I am now starting to realise what the lyrics are saying. This song is about a girl who is being forced to perform different tasks for people, but she refuses and starts to become independent.

The Teacher Machine (8/3/15)

Dear MEDL,

My English teacher organised my class to write about the 'Teacher Machine', deriving the idea from this picture:

I have completed the creative task. Here is the outcome:

My Ideal Teacher

The teachers here at John Paul College are assiduous and lovely. Some teachers are mundane, some are hilarious and diverse. A variety enjoy music, and another enjoy sports. If I had to speak up, I would say that the staff at JPC do not reach my standards. Coincidentally, a teacher machine has been created! This is what I would construct using the new technology:

I enjoy a teacher who is a female scientist. She would have two Master’s degrees in anthropological science and biochemistry with a minor in computer science. She would have earned her college education at the University of Auckland.
Despite her vast intellect, her personality will consist of honest values, a passion for looking after animals and an astonishing affection towards art, although she can only draw stick figures. My teacher creation will pay strong attention towards her health by taking martial arts and yoga classes. Her sense of humour will be inexplicably hysterical like the jokes best friends make, but with less profanity and gossip. My female scientist would have read all of the books on my ‘to-read’ list’, including all the books from the ‘Temperance Brennan’ series by Kathy Reichs

Her personal life would include the typical family of four: a hard-working husband, a senior son, and a year nine daughter who also happens to be my best friend. She would have written two books: an NCEA study guide for chemistry and a well-known crime novel - bestselling may be a little too much.

I’d say that physical traits are not important, but if the teacher machine asked, my female scientist would not have any body art/piercings except for the earring hole classic. She would have Goldilocks’  totally troublesome locks, a few occasional pimples, and a height that makes high heels an issue. Coffee is irrelevant for her as she always receives enough rest - an anomaly for adults.

The most important aspect of being an educator is how you educate your pupil. I personally prefer my ideal teacher to not establish a seating plan and let the students choose who they learn with best. If that doesn’t work, she would politely embarrass them in front of the class. What I mean by politely embarrassing students is instead of saying, “get out of my class and wait outside!”, my ideal teacher says, “I bet that Paul has life-long dreams of becoming one with his book.” This effect will not only improve Paul’s behaviour but will also make the class chortle and enjoy science better. My science teacher will push struggling students to the excellence level despite the sacrifices and will even share her own experiences and failures throughout the course. Other attributes of my version of a science teacher compromise of thorough explanations and a stable passion for teaching science.

Although I have quixotic expectations of an ideal teacher, I believe that all pupil don’t need a teacher machine to whizz up the perfect educator, but an understanding that all teachers have negative and positive traits. But no matter the circumstances, teachers will somehow make a great impact on our lives.

Usually, songs from my favourite musicals remind me of particular people. 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here' reminds me of people who are far away from me in all aspects, from physically to spiritually.

I sing and listen to 'On My Own' when I see my crush with another girl, or if he has ignored me. A little bit stupid, I know. But I have to deal with my emotions somehow.

Day 3: A song that makes you feel happy

All of the songs on my 'Bones' playlist, especially:

One of the songs that remind me of my younger years. What I enjoy in particular about this song is the motivating lyrics. This song tells you to do something productive with your life and take chances, which I do not do often.

After you have accomplished all of the things you need to do, you have to release the pain and tension after working hard. Also, the stroke of the different keys at the beginning of the song intrigue me.

Dear MEDL,

Last post I wrote about completing another blogging challenge. This March, I will complete a music-themed challenge! But there will be a rule: I will only be able to write every odd day since I have schoolwork and activities to complete.
Overall, I wish that you enjoy this month-long challenge!

Day 1: Your Favourite Song

I have a collection of favourite songs.

This wouldn't be a list created by me if there were no songs from Marina Diamandis. I enjoy the lyrics since they mostly relate to me.
"Because I feel like I'm the worst, so I always act like I'm the best."
"I know exactly what I want and who I want to be."
"If I fail, I'll fall apart."
Heck, all of  the lyrics of 'Oh No' speak to me on a high personal level.

I discovered this classic song on 'Bones' and every time it plays I automatically start to balter and sing along to the lyrics.

The hype of the BTVS theme song and the mystery behind 'You're My Sanctuary' always catch my ears' attention.

An Update on my Everyday Life (17/2/15)

Dear MEDL,

Hey! I haven't written anything on this blog since two weeks ago. How are you? I hope you all are well and happy.

I haven't been able to write on this blog because I am focusing on Electra & Marian and my academic life. There haven't been many sentiments from my life that are blog-worthy since I am publishing them on E&M already. But, however, I am planning to complete another 30-day challenge next month for you MEDL readers! I do admit that most of the posts will be late and quite short. I hope you will understand.

Let's move onto another topic. I have found some pictures from my past that I am willing to share for the remainder of this blog post:

Me at my first Holy Communion.

Chubby baby Mari in the arms of my mother.

Me & my mother on the Huka Falls Jet.

My sister & I posing with our Halloween costumes.

My cousin & I eating ice-cream (I think) on the stairs.

Day 31: What I Enjoyed in This Blogging Challenge (31/1/15)

Dear MEDL,

Day 31: "Self portrait and explain what you liked the most about this challenge."

Me, at age 12.
What I most enjoyed from completing this challenge is keeping MEDL active. Last year I only released 33 posts over a 365 day period, which I thought was not suitable for a blog which has the word 'Everyday' in the title. During the holidays I was unproductive and bored, so I decided to use the spare time I had to write blog posts every day for January. And this blogging challenge was auspicious of my goal to maintain a 'healthy' blog.

My favourite day I  wrote about is 'Day 10: Daily Routine.' It wasn't a topic I discussed on this blog before, and it was quite easy to complete.

Thank you for accompanying me as I completed this blogging challenge!

Dear MEDL,

I feel contrite that I don't publish these posts on time, and that I use my free time for something else. Anyway, here is Day 30 of the Blogging Challenge. I hope that you enjoy reading!

Day 30: "What's your favourite flavour of ice cream?"

I over capacitate myself with cookie flavoured ice cream. Cookies & Cream and Cookie Dough are the main flavours I am talking about. I think that one of the reasons why I enjoy this type of ice cream is because the times I get to taste it are erratic and unpredictable, and also because it reminds me of the priceless pleasure of baking.

A Lovely First Day (29/1/15)

Dear MEDL,

Today is the first day of year nine for me. In the morning, I was a little bit worried that I would make a fool of myself today, but it was not as bad as I expected.

At the first day of every school year, my high school holds an assembly to introduce the new students/teachers and to gather the school for a first meeting. While waiting for the assembly to start, I observed that approximately 85% of the year nines had grown at least ten centimeters taller. One of these year nines includes my best friend and many of the boys who are also going through a voice-changing phase.

After the assembly finished, we were sorted into new form classes. My form class is not that bad; I already knew most of the pupil and their personalities seemed tolerable. During our first form time session, my form teacher taught us a waiata (hymn) in Maori, introduced herself and handed out homework diaries and other sheets of paper to complete.

The rest of the day was productive with Spanish & P.E lessons. Hopefully this school year will be assiduous with a hint of tolerable rigmaroles.

Via FabulousFindsByTiffany.com

Day 29: "What's your favourite time of the year, and why?"

It doesn't matter if you call me mundane, but I enjoy ordinary time. Ordinary time is best for me because we can relax and focus on our own business, and I prefer a more relaxed time rather than an excessively hyped-up one. But if I had to pick a holiday, it would be Christmas and New Year's Day because nearly everyone is jolly and mirifical at the time. (I'm being as realistic as possible with writing 'nearly.')

Day 27: My Top Female Inspirations (27/1/15)

Dear MEDL,

Via FabulousFindsByTiffany.com
Day 27: "List 3 online friends you've never met in real life but hope to soon."

I have met many online friends on Wikia, but I don't feel like writing about them. Instead, I will write about my 5 role models, both fictional and real.

5) Helen Keller
Despite her disabilities, she has created a large impact in this world. As an active writer myself, Ms. Keller has inspired me to write without a doubt in mind.
Other than an author of many books, she had been an advocate for the disabled and a lecturer.

"Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the eye."

4) Temperance Brennan from 'Bones'
Dr. Brennan is a "world-renowned forensic anthropologist." She is the main protagonist in the TV series 'Bones' and the Temperance Brennan series by Kathy Reichs. Tempe is included in this list because she has a resilient persona. This is shown by her tremendous self-confidence, her unstoppable passion for her career, and the attitude she has towards animals.
Regardless of her inept ability to socialise and brutal honesty, she is my favourite fictional character and the source of my aspiration for a career in forensic anthropology.

"No matter what the anthropological reasons, we fight to make the world a better place."

3) Saint Maria Goretti
Saint Maria Goretti is my patron saint. She lived a rough childhood with her poor family at a farm eighty kilometers away from Rome. Maria was in charge of cooking, sewing, and looking after her infant sister while her family worked for the farmers. The Goretti-Carlini family had a deep connection with God.

At age eleven, she was stabbed repeatedly by her housemate, Alessandro Serenelli, for not obeying his instructions because "It is a sin! God does not want it!" She was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. She died while gazing at a picture of Mother Mary and clutching a cross to her chest.

"He loves, He hopes, He waits. Our Lord prefers to wait Himself for the sinner for years rather than keep us waiting an instant."

2) Jane Goodall
I admire this woman because she looks after wildlife and accepts them with all her heart. She is a quadruple threat: primatologist, ethologist, anthropologist, and the UN Messanger of Peace. Other credits include author & activist.

“We still have a long way to go. But we are moving in the right direction. If only we can overcome cruelty, to human and animal, with love and compassion we shall stand at the threshold of a new era in human moral and spiritual evolution—and realize, at last, our most unique quality: humanity.”

1) Every woman/girl I know in my everyday life
This includes my mother, Gwen & Regina, my female relatives, and the women/girls who keep me happy.

Day 26: My Favourite Food (26/1/15)

Dear MEDL,

Credit to FabulousFindsByTiffany.com
Day 26: "What's your favourite food?"

I have two types of favourite food: Filipino cuisine and Kiwi food.

My favourite food from the Philippines is called 'dinuguan'. To a foreigner, the ingredients would sound disgusting, but once you get to try it you'll understand why I enjoy it. Dinuguan consists of pork and its blood. Don't worry, we don't eat it raw; first it needs to be cooked, and then mixed with rice. My grandfather cooks the best style of dinuguan, but my parents don't know the secret recipe he uses.

In New Zealand, we have a Māori dish named steamed pudding. Steamed pudding is a simple dish which is basically vanilla pudding topped with warm cream. Every time I go to a Māori occasion I always fill myself up with steamed pudding. It is scrumptious!

Day 25: A Description of my Current Location (25/1/15)

Dear MEDL,

Via FabulousFindsByTiffany.com
Day 25: "Describe your location."

I am in my bedroom, the usual place where I write my blog posts. My bedroom is a clutter at the moment because I feel lethargic and sluggish (that is not a good reason, Marian!) from staying on the computer too much.

My guitar is in the left corner leaning on the bag hanger and the black luggage.

On the walls, you can find my learning wall from 2014 which I haven't bothered to take down, my self-portrait taken from 2011 and my two art projects.

On my brown desk, I see my calendar which was given to me from school, my pens and pencils and blank pieces of paper.

The top of my bookshelves house my beauty products, including two perfumes given to me by my two best friends, my mother's old jewellery box, and my body lotions. Inside the bookshelves contain my school books, my journals, and my novels.

You probably think that my bedroom looks fine, but the writing acts as a disguise for the mess in my bedroom.

Day 24: "Describe your most embarrassing moment."

Oh, no. I have too many. It's difficult to pick only one of them.

I choose to describe the time when I released many negative posts on my Facebook wall, even though I have already mentioned it on this blog.

I was going through a depressed phase when I was feeling antagonistic against my life. To express my dark feelings, I wrote a series of Facebook posts saying, "I am sick & tired of this." or, "Everybody sucks."
There was a result of a turmoil. My mother nearly banned me from my laptop and my aunt began to worry about my wellbeing. This embarrassing time affected my reputation and still follows my every action, whether positive or miserable.

I'd like to warn other people to be cautious of what you post on your social media websites, especially if you are in my age group.

Hobbiton Adventures (21/1/15)

Dear MEDL,

Samantha E. and her family invited me to come along with them to the Hobbiton movie set today!

This is my second time visiting the movie set in Matamata. I came for the first time seven years ago in 2008.

The tour started with a sign saying, "Welcome to Hobbiton," as shown below. We walked up the hill and passed through some Hobbit Holes.

Most of the Hobbit Holes have a theme which gave us clues about their occupation. This particular Hobbit Hole gave us the idea that the Hobbit who lives here is a fisherman.

During the tour, the guide told us some facts. He mentioned that most of the trees on this set are artificial and that Peter Jackson chose this location for its viridescent and vibrant land.

The tour concluded with a relaxing free drink at the Green Dragon Pub. Since every drink had alcohol in it, Samantha & I were only to choose ginger beer.

Every year I am supposed to have an A4 journal to write my thoughts in. I would bring that journal to school and basically everywhere I go. Everything, I write in my journals, is a way for my future self to reminisce what I was like at this age.

I also collect books. In my bookshelves, I have 17 books, including my Bible, a dictionary, and my eleven novels. To be honest, I haven't read all of them and prefer to borrow books from the library!

Other things, I tend to collect, are pictures from my past, school stationary, and bags. I choose not to write about them in this blog post because I have no intentions about these topics.

Dear MEDL,

Day 19: "List 5 blogs you read on a regular basis & why."

Since I don't read blogs, I will replace them with the top 5 Instagram accounts I follow & why.

5) @parisinfourmonths
Carin Olsson is a photographer who moves to France to "follow her dreams", as mentioned in her biography. Her photography captures colourful sceneries, delicious foods, and the bluest waters.
I enjoy this account because after viewing negative posts on my Instagram, her stunning photos enlighten my feed.

4) @blogilates
Cassey Ho is a Youtuber and a fitness instructor. Her photos inspire me to get off of my chair and exercise. I follow her also because she motivates me to become a happy person and to enjoy life as it is.

3) Every 'Bones' themed account on Instagram
Honourable mentions are @omgdeschanel, @thattimethatplace, and @squint.squad.
Because 'Bones' is the best.

2) @minimalistbaker
Dana Shultz is a cook and a food blogger. Dana and her husband run a website named minimalistbaker.com where they create "simple, delicious recipes that require 10 ingredients or less, one bowl, or thirty minutes to prepare."

1) @nois7
I discovered this account on Buzzfeed and as soon as I saw those pictures it was a necessity to follow him.
Robert Jahns is a digital artist and a freelance art director, as said in his biography. He makes beautiful edits which possess you into thinking that you live in a fantasy world.

Happy Birthday Mum! (18/1/15)

Dear MEDL,

Day 18: "Where are you happiest?"

It really depends on how I feel. If I'd gone through the worst day ever, I would prefer to lie down alone in bed reading the perfect book. If I have had something august happened to me recently, I'd choose to be surrounded by assiduous people.

When I'm surrounded by books, musical instruments, or radiant things/people, I turn my 'happy' switch on instantly. I am also happiest when I'm talking to the souls which are above us in heaven.

Receiving awards make me blissful. Seeing my loved ones receive commendations also makes me cheerful and thankful to know that I have talented friends and family members.

When are you happiest? Let me know on Facebook or enter it in the comment section.

Day 17: Why & When Did I Start Blogging? (17/1/15)

Dear MEDL,

Day 17: "Why & when did you start blogging?"

In February, 2012, I created an account on Blogger. My primary school used Blogger to show what we were studying to make the classroom more interactive. Due to this, I decided that writing about my everyday life would be useful to improve my English skills and display what I was like as a pre-teen.

Later in June, I created 'Marian's Everyday Life', a blog where I would post about my daily activities. Some of the posts included what I learned at school, how I spent my sick days, and basically every little thing a young girl does in her life.

I created more blogs in 2012, including 'Marian the Anime and Vocaloid Lover', and 'Electra & Marian' (previously known as 'Stuff 'n' Nonsense, Bits 'n' Bobs'). I made 'Marian the Anime and Vocaloid Lover' in August, 2012 because my obsession with Anime & Vocaloids were strong enough to write about. In the end, the blog became inactive in less than a year.
'Stuff 'n' Nonsense, Bits 'n' Bobs' was created in December. The purpose of the blog was to express my creativity through blogging. The blog eventually changed its name to 'Electra & Marian' in May, 2012 because the blog title was too long and the theme was also altered.

Flash forward to today. Both of my main blogs will turn 3 years old this year; MEDL on June 12 and E&M on December 15. Thank you for reading my blog posts all this time.

Dear MEDL,

Today my mother & I toured around town. We window-shopped, drank some frappuccinos from Starbucks and bought two of Kathy Reich's "Temperance Brennan" books.
